Schools get advice on creationism

Creationism is to be debated alongside the theory of evolution in science and religious education lessons in secondary schools across Hampshire.
Teachers are being given advice on how questions about evolution and God can be explored with 11 to 14-year-olds.
Critics said the advice was “a retrograde step” and should be dropped.
But Hampshire County Council said the report advised schools about resources they may wish to use to encourage “reasoned enquiry and open discussion”.
The report was put together by the county’s standing advisory council for religious education (Sacre), in an attempt to address the public debate about the relationship between evolution and faith.
The report says the county is “always looking for our students to explore complexity” and sets out how schools may want to take the debate forward in science and religious education (RE) lessons.
Intelligent design
The guidance – issued to 70 secondary schools in Hampshire – covers Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, as well as creationism which upholds the biblical story of creation.
It suggests teachers explore with pupils the reasons why Darwin’s theories were dismissed and ridiculed in the 19th century.
The advice examines whether it is possible to believe in evolution and a creator God and looks at the concept of intelligent design, which suggests the complexity of the world makes God’s intervention the only reasonable explanation.
It considers the heated debate on evolution between Bishop Samuel Wilberforce and Professor Thomas Huxley, as well as the Roman Catholic Church’s stance that mankind may have evolved but that God created the soul.

Lee becomes Joseph in TV victory

Performer Lee Mead has landed the lead role in West End musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat after winning a BBC One talent show.
Mead came top of a public vote on Any Dream Will Do, beating supermarket worker Keith Jack, 19, of Midlothian.
The victory means he will star in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at the Adelphi Theatre from 17 July.
The 25-year-old, from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, has already played the Pharaoh in a touring production of Joseph.
Mead also has experience as an understudy, and appeared as a dancer in Geri Halliwell’s video for It’s Raining Men.
Jack, 19, from Dalkeith, is a supermarket shelf-stacker, while third-placed Lewis Bradley, 17, is a performing arts student from Middlesbrough, who got down to the last 15 for the Billy Elliot film.
Some three million votes were cast during the course of the evening.
Mead told presenter Graham Norton: “Support has grown every week and I want to thank everyone so much and those that didn’t vote, I’m going to go out there and give you a hell of show.”
Lord Lloyd-Webber said he was “very happy” with the outcome.
“Remember, people thought that Lee was the pro. He’s only been an understudy in a show and has never performed in front of me or really very many people at all. I think it’s an amazing achievement,” he said.

Blog: ‘Detailed talks’

The organisation said there were some outstanding issues for which it was seeking amendments of the proposal.
In particular, it wishes to see alternative route options considered in greater detail where the route crosses the Cairngorms National Park and the Ochils, near the
Wallace Monument.
John Thomson, SNH director, said: “This development is seen as the key to unlocking the environmental and economic benefits of renewable energy production in areas
which hold some of the best resources in Europe.
“It will also inevitably impact upon areas valued highly for their wildlife, habitats, and landscapes, and for the outdoor recreation opportunities that they offer.”
He added: “The development will lead to some unavoidable adverse impacts. Our role is to ensure these are minimised as much as possible.
“We will need further information to be supplied and the acceptance of planning conditions, as well as more detailed talks with the developer in relation to landscape
and visual impacts.”
Scottish Natural Heritage has said it is not opposed in principle to plans to build a 137-mile power transmission line of huge pylons from the Highlands.
The 400kV line from Beauly, near Inverness, to Denny, near Falkirk, was the “most extensive development” on which the body had ever taken a view.
It did say it would prefer alternative routes for some parts of the line.
Plans were submitted to the Scottish Executive last year by Scottish and Southern Energy and ScottishPower.

BBC names 12 Oliver TV hopefuls

The names of the 12 boys who hope to win the part of Oliver in a West End musical have been released by the BBC.
Nine are from England, while two live in Wales and the other is from Northern Ireland. All are aged from 10 to 13.
They will take part in I’d Do Anything on BBC One from next Saturday, and eventually three of them will be selected for the lead role.
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sir Cameron Mackintosh are among the judges, and the role of Nancy will also be filled.
A dozen young women, whose ages range from 17 to 28, are competing to be that character.
The boys include Bon Jovi fan Alexander, who is 11 and lives in London.
Ten-year-old Arthur, from Bristol, wants to own a theatre when he is an adult, while Chester, aged 12 and from Middlesex, hopes to become a professional actor.
Football fan Gareth is a 12-year-old from Londonderry, while 11-year-old Gwion, whose home is in Carmarthenshire, wants to be a musical director.
Also on the list are Harry, a rugby fan aged 12 from Oxfordshire, and Jonny, a 13-year-old from Warwickshire whose ambition is to be a marine biologist.
Thirteen-year-old Chelsea supporter Jordan is the second resident of Wales among the dozen, while Joseph, who is 10 and lives in Berkshire, is a keen rugby player.
Another contestant is 13-year-old Kwayedza from Kent, who hopes to be a successful singer-songwriter.
And completing the list are Shrek fan Laurence, who is 11 and lives in Cheshire, and 10-year-old Sam from Hampshire, who loves the Billy Elliot film and stage show.
Oliver! first reached the London stage in 1960 and became a musical movie in 1968, starring Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes. It went on to win five Oscars.
Previous television talent shows have seen Lord Lloyd Webber find a new Maria – Connie Fisher – for a production of The Sound of Music and an actor – Lee Mead – to
play the title role in a new production of the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat musical

Pylon network inquiry under way

A public inquiry into plans for a 137-mile power line through the Scottish countryside has begun.
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said it wants to replace an existing line between Beauly, near Inverness, and Denny, near Stirling.
The inquiry, which began in Perth, follows years of controversy over the proposals for about 600 pylons, which would be up to 65m tall.
SSE said it believed the plans would eventually be approved by ministers.
The power company said the £320m development was needed for the reliable transmission of electricity from renewable sources from the north of Scotland, which would be enough to power one million homes.
However, the proposals, which would see pylons erected in some of Scotland’s most picturesque locations, including the Cairngorms National Park and the Southern Highlands, have attracted fierce opposition since being announced in 2005.
More than 17,000 objections have been received by the Scottish Executive so far, including concerns raised by local authorities through which the power line would pass, as well as conservation body Scottish Natural Heritage.
Residents have also formed opposition groups, including Highlands Before Pylons and Pylon Pressure, raising concerns about threats to tourism, house prices and health.
The 11-month inquiry, set to be the longest of its kind in Scotland since devolution, will hear evidence from a long list of witnesses and sit in Inverness, Newtonmore and Stirling.
SSE has already ruled out an argument for putting the line underground on cost grounds.
The company’s chief operating officer, Colin Hood, said: “We believe that our proposals, which reflect five years of environmental and technical studies and public consultations, are strongly founded and will eventually receive the go-ahead.
“It is vital that they do, because the country’s goals for greener and more indigenous sources of energy depend on it.”
Opening the inquiry’s first session, principal reporter Timothy Brian said the proceedings were unusually long and complex.
“The aim is to give everyone a fair hearing and provide the reporters with all the information necessary,” he said.
The inquiry reports will eventually be submitted to Scottish ministers for a final decision.

Webber unveils Eurovision singers

Andrew Lloyd Webber has unveiled the six hopefuls he has chosen to bid for glory at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Two male soloists, two female singers, a duo consisting of twin sisters and an all-male quintet will do battle in BBC One show Your Country Needs You.
Andrew Lloyd Webber will write the song for the successful act, set to take part in May’s competition in Moscow.
After a series of live shows, the winning act, which is chosen by the public, will be revealed on 31 January.
The first live programme takes place on Saturday 10 January on BBC One.
Saturday night’s launch show at 1910 GMT initially attracted 6.4 million people, but ratings slipped to capture an average audience of 4.9 million.
Graham Norton, who is hosting the programme, will take over from Sir Terry Wogan as the UK’s commentator on the Eurovision final, which is taking place on 16 May in the Russian capital.
The female solo hopefuls are Essex teenager Charlotte and Jade from east London – billed as Plaistow’s very own Rihanna.
Mark, from Denbighshire, north Wales, and Damien, a 32-year-old singer-songwriter from London, have been picked to represent the male soloists.
The Twins – Francine and Nicola – are also in the running, along with vocal group Emperors of Soul.
Lloyd Webber, who has taken on the challenge of improving the UK’s dire results in recent song contests, said: “I think on the whole we’ve got a proper set of contestants.”
At last year’s competition in Belgrade, UK singer Andy Abraham finished last in a field of 25 entrants.
